Vibe coding and AI no-code: do they replace custom software?

Vibe coding — describing what you want in plain language and letting a model generate and run the code — has become the default way to kick off a project in 2026, and no-code platforms have bolted AI copilots onto nearly every feature they ship. The pitch is hard to resist for any small business: a working app in a weekend, no team to hire. The catch is that the same studies measuring that speed also measure what breaks along the way, and those numbers rarely make it into the sales demo.
What vibe coding and AI no-code tools actually promise
The term describes a specific workflow: instead of writing code line by line, someone describes the outcome they want and a generative model (GPT, Claude, Gemini or others) produces and runs the code, with the person reviewing the result rather than the process. No-code and low-code platforms — Bubble, Webflow, Glide and dozens more — have wired the same logic into a built-in “copilot”: ask it to connect an API, parse some data or build a flow, and the AI handles it without anyone touching a manual config screen.
Market numbers track that shift. Gartner puts the low-code/no-code market at roughly $44.5 billion in 2026, growing at a 19% CAGR, with 70% of new enterprise applications built on some low-code or no-code layer this year, up from under 25% in 2023. Gartner also estimates that 80% of the people using these tools are no longer IT staff — they’re employees in other departments solving their own problems directly.
The numbers the demo doesn’t show
Here’s what’s worth checking before deciding vibe coding is production-ready. The Spring 2026 GenAI Code Security report from Veracode, which evaluated more than 150 models — including the latest GPT, Gemini and Claude releases — found that 45% of AI-generated code introduces at least one OWASP Top 10 vulnerability. The trend line is the telling part: syntactic correctness has climbed from 50% to 95% since 2023, but the security pass rate has been stuck between 45% and 55% over the same period, largely unmoved by newer model generations. The failures aren’t evenly spread either: models catch SQL injection reasonably well (82-86% pass rate) but consistently miss subtler threats, with only a 15% pass rate on XSS and 13% on log injection.
The Cloud Security Alliance has scanned vibe-coded applications already running in production: across more than 1,400 projects, 65% had some security issue and 58% carried at least one critical vulnerability, with exposed secrets and credentials among the most common findings. On top of that sits a different flavor of technical debt: the generated code “works,” but no one on the team fully understands why — so when it breaks in production, someone ends up debugging logic they never wrote or learned.
When vibe coding and no-code are the right call
None of this means avoiding them. They win clearly in a few situations:
- Validating a business idea before committing to development, with a clickable prototype in days.
- Low-stakes internal tools: usage dashboards, one-off automations, forms that don’t touch sensitive data.
- Teams with no development budget who need something working now, accepting they may rebuild it later.
When you actually need custom software
Vibe coding starts to fail exactly where a business starts to genuinely depend on the system:
- When it handles customer data, payments or payroll. Veracode’s and CSA’s numbers aren’t a theoretical risk — they’re security failures measured in live production systems.
- When it needs to integrate with an existing ERP, CRM or e-commerce stack, where a generic no-code platform either lacks the right connector or ships one with serious limits.
- When the business depends on the system scaling without a rewrite every time user or data volume grows.
- When code ownership matters. Many no-code platforms tie the project to their own infrastructure — leave, and you can’t always take the work with you.
