AI website builders vs custom design: how to choose

Wix Harmony promises a website in minutes. When that's enough, when it costs you clients and SEO, and the real case of Plata Garage's custom build.

Published on · Evicron

On January 21, 2026, Wix launched Harmony, a website builder that pairs natural-language “vibe coding” with visual editing and its own agent, Aria, generating publish-ready copy, components and structure in minutes. It’s not alone: Framer, Squarespace and a dozen other tools have shipped the same idea over the past year. The question we hear every week at Evicron, an AI and custom software studio based in Barcelona, isn’t “do I need a new website” anymore — it’s “can I generate it with AI, or do I need custom design.” The answer depends on what that website actually has to do for the business, and this guide walks through how to decide.

What an AI website builder genuinely solves

Tools like Harmony promise a “deployment-ready” site with SEO, accessibility and basic e-commerce built in, generated from a text description. For a business that needs an online presence fast — a landing page to validate an idea, a freelancer’s first site, a one-off event — that’s exactly the right tool: low cost, live in hours, no dependency on anyone else for the first round of changes.

The tool itself isn’t the problem. Treating it as a universal replacement is, once the business needs the website to do more than just exist.

Where the seams start to show

Three limits show up as soon as a website has to compete, not just exist:

  • Real SEO and GEO, not just a checked box. A builder “including SEO” means correct basic tags, not a content strategy, internal linking or a semantic structure built so Google and generative engines actually cite you. We cover this in detail in what your website needs for AI to recommend it — decisions a template generated in minutes doesn’t make for you.
  • Pages that start looking the same. When thousands of businesses generate their site with the same engine and the same layout patterns, the risk of duplicate or near-identical content across sites is real, and search engines penalize that in crawling and ranking, not just in how it looks.
  • Business logic that doesn’t fit in a generator. Deposit-based bookings, catalogs with complex filtering, an internal management backoffice, integrations with an ERP or payment gateway: the moment a website needs to do something specific to the business, not just display it, a generator falls short or forces you to work around the limitation with patches.

When custom design and development pays off

It’s worth paying more and waiting longer when any of these apply:

  • The website is a sales channel, not a business card: every lost conversion point or second of load time is real money.
  • The business competes in a sector where SEO is already contested, and standing apart from the dozens of sites built with the same generator is part of the strategy.
  • There’s a piece of software behind the storefront: bookings, payments, a management panel, custom analytics.
  • The brand needs to look different from competitors who, increasingly, use the same generator.

The Plata Garage case

Plata Garage, a premium used-car dealer in Sabadell, needed something no website generator ships out of the box: a vehicle catalog with deposit-based online bookings, appointments, valuations and a management backoffice connected to the same application, all with proper technical SEO and GEO and cookieless analytics. We built it as a single Next.js, React and TypeScript app on Postgres: the website and the internal management tool are the same system, not two things duct-taped together. That integration — impossible to replicate with a template generated in minutes — is exactly what a catalog-and-booking website needs to actually work, not just exist.

How to decide without getting swept up by the demo

Before choosing, answer three questions:

  1. Is the website meant to sell or just to inform? If it sells, every design decision affects conversion, and it deserves to be treated as part of the business, not a formality.
  2. Does it need to do anything beyond displaying content? Bookings, payments, an internal panel or integrations are the clearest sign a generator won’t be enough.
  3. How much does it matter to stand apart in search and in AI engines? If your sector already has heavy competition built with the same tool, custom SEO and GEO work is an advantage you’ll see in traffic, not just in looks.

If none of these apply yet, an AI generator is a reasonable way to start. If any of them do, staying there gets more expensive over time than investing in custom web design with SEO and AI from the start: at Evicron we work with a fixed quote after a free discovery call, a clickable demo by week two, and code you own with no lock-in, as we also covered in what business web design actually needs to convert.
